The Gloucester Pottery School offers studio space for individual use during the day and some evenings during non-class times. This opportunity is available to experienced potters who have completed at least one class in pottery and glazing. Studio membership is available to ages 18yrs and up.

New studio members will pay a onetime fee of $33.19 + HST for a half hour orientation of the studio and rules. Private lessons are available to hone your skills at $61.95 + HST per hour. Special Needs private lessons $53.10 + HST per hour.

Unlimited Hours Monthly Membership:

  • (without clay storage):  Cost 76.99+HST
  • (with clay storage in damp cupboard):  Cost 85.84+HST
  • Studio Membership can be bought anytime during the month and expires on the same date the following month.
  • Studio members can purchase several months in advance and their expiry date will match accordingly.
  • Memberships cannot be extended or deferred. (weekly rate, 7 days is available with clay storage for the week at $27.43 +HST)
  • Studio members should use their own tools, tool kits are available for a cost of $30.97 + HST
  • Gloucester Pottery School aprons are available for purchase at $25 + HST
  • Studio is open for members to use during the day and some evenings during non-class times.

Drop-in Membership:

  • Cost is $13.27 + HST per hour
  • Drop-in can be purchased in studio during office hours or at Front Desk of the Shenkman Arts Centre
  • Studio members should use their own tools, Tool kits cost for $30.97 + HST
  • Studio is open to drop-in members anytime while the Shenkman Arts Centre is open.

Clay:

  • Clay must be purchased through the school ($46.02 + HST a bag)
  • The cost of clay includes glazes and 1 bisque firing only.
  • Mark all bags of clay with your name and date of purchase (unmarked clay will be recycled)
  • Clay can only be stored in members’ cupboard with the purchase of membership with storage.

Glaze Firings:

  • As of February 4, 2019 all pots measured in inches are subject to the following glaze firing charges:

Bowls: 2x3x3 or 3×3 x4 or 5×2 x3  $2.00 +HST
Bowls: 5x7x7 or 6x8x8 $4.00+HST 
Bowls: 6x11x11 or 6x12x12 $6.00+HST 
Mugs: 4x3x5or 4x4x6 or 4x5x5 $3.00+HST 
Mugs: 5x6x5 or 6x6x5 or 8x5x5 $4.00+HST 
Pitchers: 10x8x8 or 11x6x6 $5.00+HST 
Decorations (each): 1x1x2 to 1x 3 x 3 $0.50+HST
Decorations (each): 1x1x6 to 1x1x8 $1.00+HST 
Dishes: 1x8x8 to 1x5x7 $2.00+HST 
Dishes: 2 x 4×8 to 2 1/2 x 8 x8 or 3x 5×5 $3.00+HST 
Oblong Dish: 1 ½ x5x11 or 2x4x 12 $4.00+HST
Plates: 2 ½ x12x12 $5.00+HST 
Plaques: ½ x 12×12 $6.00+HST 
Anything larger $8.00+HST 

Identification of pots and storage:

  • Inscribe an ‘X’ on all leather hard pieces to distinguish members’ work from class work.
  • Work in progress may be stored on shelves designated for Members in shelf room.
  • Greenware can be stored for a maximum of 1 week. 
  • Bisqueware can be stored for a maximum of 1 month. 
  • Work ready for bisque firing can be placed on the appropriate shelf in the kiln room and will be fired as space becomes available.
  • Work ready for glaze firing should be placed on the designated shelves in the tech room. Please fill out glaze firing form in attached file holder, and give to a GPS employee for processing. Glazeware will not be fired until payment is processed.
  • Small locker rental $34.07 +HST or Large locker rental $38.05 +HST for three months

Glazes:

  • All glazes must be thoroughly mixed and tested for thickness using the hydrometers provided.
  • If the hydrometer floats below the black line, it is too thick – please do not use it, but mark the bucket to be thinned by a technician.
  • No double dipping of glaze on lower half of exteriors and no glazing inside foot ring.
  • GLAZE DAMAGE TO KILN SHELVES, MORE THAN ONE CONTACT, CHARGE OF $25 + HST AND UP.

Students need to be familiarized with sign-in procedures. All members will log in and out at the Shenkman front desk. If the studio front door is locked, the key will be available to members with current studio use membership. Membership can be renewed at the front desk of the Shenkman Arts Centre.

All users of the studio must follow the procedures regardless whether the studio is open at the time of visit or a key is needed.

Here are the steps for the sign-in procedure:

  1. Go to front desk on 1stlevel of Shenkman Arts Centre
  2. Ask for the “Shenkman key log” and sign-in
  3. Request a key if studio is not open and write “key #” under “KEY CODE” column. If a key is not needed because the studio is open write “N/A”
  4. Ask for the “Gloucester Pottery School Members” binder and sign-in

Here are the steps for sign-out procedure:

  1. Go to front desk on 1stlevel of Shenkman Arts Centre
  2. Ask for the “Shenkman key log” and sign-out
  3. Return the key if a key was taken.
  4. Ask for the “Gloucester Pottery School Members” binder and sign–out
