Mr. Takeshi Shimizu - February 17, 2015

Gloucester Pottery School in conjunction with the Japanese Embassy of Ottawa and the Ottawa School of Art is pleased to present a complimentary demonstration from master potter, Mr. Takeshi Shimizu. Mr. Takeshi Shimizu is visiting us from the region of Tanba in Japan. The art of this Japanese village is timeless. At Tanba a distinctly Japanese expression in ceramics began to emerge some 800 years ago. The vigorous, earthy forms made in these old pottery communities are revered as an important part of the nation's heritage, but they are little known in the West. When the great Western collections of Oriental art were formed, the rougher wares of the feudal period were overlooked; today they can be properly seen only in Japan. Mr. Takeshi Shimizu works in his family’s studio, Tanba Pottery Works, with his father.
