Ceramic Instructor and Technician

Position Summary and Essential Job functions

The hired candidate will be a team player with strong interpersonal skills and in-depth technical knowledge of ceramics. The candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  • Instructing ceramics to the community we serve including: children, youth, and adults
  • Techniques of handbuilding: provides in-studio demonstrations on various aspects and techniques in the specified medium appropriate to the skill level of the class
  • Instruction of wheel courses and/or private lessons following the approved course curriculum
  • Demonstrates and teaches students regarding tool use, equipment and technical aspects related to the art program
  • Instructs all classes on the dates and times as agreed, being responsible for the safety and supervision of program participants
  • Candidate will be expected to create new and innovative projects, help plan annual pottery sale
  • Keeps track of attendance of classes and report weekly to administration
  • Reports any changes to your regular class schedule (absent students, inclement weather) to administration promptly
  • Communicates Gloucester Pottery School Health and Safety Policies and other pertinent information to students
  • Prepares course curriculum to the administration
  • Distributes course curriculum and surveys to the students
  • Identifies and reports repairs to studio equipment as required
  • Keeps abreast of current program information, attends and participates in meetings, workshops and training sessions
  • Acts as ceramic technician when not instructing
  • Flexibility with additional weekend and evening work as required for special events, bookings and exhibits


Candidates should have:

  • Ability to speak in both French and English
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow direction and multitask
  • Love of creative art
  • Degree or Diploma in the specified medium OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years instructional experience: instructing children, youth, or adults
  • 2 years technical ceramic knowledge: technical knowledge and experience related to the specified medium including studio experience
  • Knowledge of ceramics including glazing and kiln loading
  • 2-5 years of consistent throwing
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety practices in relation to working in the studio arts and specified medium
  • Candidate must attend “New Employee Orientation” training run by the Gloucester Pottery School and/or the Shenkman Arts Centre (SAC).
  • A Police Reference Check will be required as a condition of employment for this position.


Preferred candidates would have these assets but not essential:

  • First Aid and CPR
